Discussion: The process of creating a website using Google Sites
The process of creating a website using Google Sites is very straightforward and simple. You can log into sites.google.com using your existing google account (or create a new one). From there you would simply select from the “Start a New Site” menu at the top of the page. You can choose one of the recommended templates available or expand the template gallery to see more. I chose to select “blank” and create my own using preset themes.
The graphical interface is very easy to understand and there is a quick learning curve for most people, especially those who have previous skills with Software as a Service (SAAS) design platforms. There are three easily navigated tabs for creating a site. The first, “Insert,” enables the user to select content blocks and has a dozen or more additional options for content including (but not limited to) embedded maps, embedded videos, forms, charts, calendars etc. The second tab, “Pages,” is where a user will create and add pages and subpages to their site. The third tab, “Themes,” offers a variety of pre-design themes that are clean and professional in appearance.
In the settings, there are multiple options for creating custom domains for publishing a finished site. The user can also publish their site through sites.google.com and create a shareable and public link. I chose to connect my domain, www.kristitorsak.com to the website I created, and in addition, I created one of the sites.google.com subdomains so that I could view and access my work immediately.
